The minister of social development Hon. Matebatso Doti says it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure safety and protection of the elderly in order for them to avoid dementia and depression.
Commemorating the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, under this year’s theme “Take care of the elderly during COVID-19 pandemic”, Doti said everyone has to educate the elderly about COVID-19, assist them in accessing health services and also help them to get treatment should they test positive for the virus.
She also indicated that the elderly continue to be victims of assault especially in their families, and pointed out that they also have a right to live, access services and also to public participation.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is marked annually on the 15th of June.
