Blue cross director Mr.  Thabo Mokhuts’oane said this has been confirmed by the recent statistics which indicated that Lesotho ranks 21st in Africa in alcohol consumption while worldwide its on 101st position. Mokhuts’oane said their centre normally accommodates 90 clients annually, which is done in 3 batches of 30 persons per intake which is mostly the youth with a few cases of the elderly, however, they once had one client aged 10 who also had to under-go rehabilitation.

He also stated due to the high rate of alcohol consumption in the country, they sometimes accommodate more clients at the center. Mokhuts’oane also stated that this result in high number of road accidents as a result of drunken driving.

According to the 2020 statistics compiled by the police, road safety and the department of traffic, there were 2553 road accidents which involved drivers aged 21-30 and most of those accidents are alleged to be alcohol- related.
