United Nations Population Fund Country’s Representative Dr. Mark Derveeuw says, unplanned pregnancies are destroying the lives of Basotho girls
Speaking at the launch of the State of the World Population report in Maseru today, Dr. Derveeuw said, the report shows that more than 60 percent of unintended pregnancies end in abortion.
He said these abortions, most of which are illegal, have become a leading factor of mortality rate in Lesotho, with Mohale’s-Hoek being the leading district.
Officially launching the report, the minister of development planning Selibe Mochoboroane said the theme of this year’s State of the World Population Report proves that, the issue of unintended pregnancy needs to be seriously attended to, as it leads to high mortality rate and school drop outs.
This year’s theme is-‘Seeing the unseen: The case for action in the neglected crisis of unintended pregnancy.’
