The Ministry of Social Development through the Department of the Elderly will commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at Matelile Ha Seeiso on Wednesday next week.

The Ministry’s District Elderly Care Officer Mrs. ‘Maleloko Sakoane says the commemoration is aimed at promoting a better understanding of abuse and neglect of the elderly, by raising awareness on different issues that affect the elderly.

Sakoane said the day will be commemorated under the theme “the elderly are entitled to respect and care from all, we should ensure that the elderly live their aged years being well taken care of”.

The day will be commemorated together with that of the African Child Day with the hope that the elderly can live harmoniously with children

At least 4.4 million people in 95 countries are stateless or of undetermined nationality. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in its annual report marking the 9th anniversary of its #IBelong campaign said, the actual figure globally is believed to be significantly higher, given the relative invisibility of stateless people in national statistical exercises.
