Minister Moleko Vows to Bring Clean Water to Remote Basotho Villages

The Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, has pledged that, his ministry will ensure Basotho in remote villages, including Thaba Bosiu, Mapholaneng and Tlokoeng, gain access to clean drinking water.

Speaking today in the Senate in response to questions about water supply in rural areas and towns, Mr. Moleko expressed concern over the current situation where water passes through these areas via large-scale projects, yet local residents lack access.

He emphasized that, communities near water projects should benefit directly from the resources adding that, developing these areas with guesthouses, electricity, and roads could also attract tourism.

The Principal Chief of Thaba Bosiu, Chief Khoabane Theko, highlighted his community’s urgent need for water.

He warned that, unresolved water issues could lead to frustration and vandalism of infrastructure, such as equipment from the Metolong project.

He called on the ministry to address these concerns as a priority to maintain peace and order.

Meanwhile, the Principal Chief of Likhoele, Chief Lerotholi Leshoboro, stressed the need for legislation to guarantee Basotho access to water for both household use and irrigation.

He argued that, water should not merely flow through pipes but also fill ponds in villages near these projects, ensuring that communities benefit directly.
