The Ministry of Environment and Forestry recently held a one-day meeting in Maseru, to develop a draft document on biodiversity. The initiative aims to secure support from international organizations dedicated to biodiversity conservation.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director of Land Protection and Conservation Mr. Nkoebe Lerotholi explained that, the objective was to identify appropriate methods for drafting the document. He highlighted that, once approved, the document would facilitate education on biodiversity conservation; an issue he noted is increasingly neglected by Basotho.
Independent researcher Ms. Lerato Seleteng Kose presented findings indicating that, districts such as Maseru, Mafeteng and Quthing have been severely impacted by soil erosion, partly due to the disregard for biodiversity. She further noted that, the effects of climate change, including prolonged droughts, have exacerbated the situation.
Representing non-governmental organisations, Ms. Mantopi Lebofa emphasized that, early Basotho lived in harmony with nature, planting and preserving trees. She lamented that, modern practices have shifted towards cutting trees without replanting. However, she expressed hope that, the meeting would inspire efforts to educate communities on restoring and conserving nature.
