Wind Energy Project to Lift Jobs, Power, and Roads in Mohale’s Hoek Lesotho.

Mashaleng Community Council Secretary in Mohale’s Hoek, Mrs. Lineo Mokhants’o says, the upcoming Wind Energy Project will contribute to job creation, electricity supply and infrastructure development, particularly in roads, across the Mashaleng, Thaba-Mokhele, and Lithipeng community councils.

Mokhants’o made these remarks following a two-day Sublease Agreement Workshop for key stakeholders involved in land allocation. The workshop, facilitated by Hirundo Lesotho, focused on discussions regarding the land sublease agreement for the project.

She noted that, between 2020 and 2021, local authorities were taken on a study tour to the Eastern Cape South Africa, where they observed the operations of a wind farm and learned how to generate electricity supplied to the national grid.

Meanwhile, Hirundo Lesotho’s Communications Officer Ms. Limpho Thoahlane stated that, stakeholders raised crucial concerns regarding land valuation, contract duration, financial contingencies and community impact.

There was also an emphasis on infrastructure development, particularly road markings, and ensuring transparency by translating key documents into Sesotho.

Thoahlane assured that, Hirundo Lesotho is committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders throughout the process, for a smooth project implementation. She added that, further consultations will continue, with construction expected to begin between 2026 and 2027; subject to the completion of necessary documentation and funding approval.

The workshop was attended by representatives from community councils, district legal authorities, the district administrator’s office and project developers.
