Farmers Showcase Local Produce at National Market Day

Today marked the National Market Day; an event organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition. Farmers from across the country gathered at Pitso Ground in Maseru, to showcase their products.

Speaking to PC FM, some farmers raised concerns about challenges affecting their businesses. Mrs. ‘Mamofelehetsi Moerane, an egg producer, expressed frustration over slow sales, attributing the issue to the illegal smuggling of eggs into Lesotho, particularly by foreign nationals, such as the Chinese.

She noted that, despite the ministry’s announcement to ban egg imports, the problem still persists; negatively impacting local producers.

Meanwhile, crop farmer Mr. Khauta Thandazo highlighted the lack of proper irrigation methods as a major obstacle to production. He urged the government, to step in and provide support to address this challenge.

At the same event, PC FM observed the presence of the LEFEDI Association, an organization dedicated to empowering people with disability through crop farming, and other agricultural ventures.

Many farmers expressed appreciation for the event’s success stating that, it provided them with an opportunity to connect with potential buyers. The initiative is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to link farmers to the market
