The need for a national language policy is crucial for the effective use and preservation of the Sesotho language in Lesotho.
This was emphasised during a stakeholder meeting that brought together representatives from the media, Sesotho language teachers and other key players.
The meeting was convened by the Lesotho Communications Authority-LCA and the Maseru District Administrator.
During discussions, Sesotho language teachers expressed concern that, the media is contributing to the erosion of the language.
They argued that, media outlets often use diluted Sesotho, incorporate linguistic influences from other languages, or follow trends in sociolinguistics that weaken the integrity of the language.
The teachers stressed the need for media professionals to receive proper training to ensure that, they convey accurate and culturally appropriate information to the younger generation.
Furthermore, the teachers pointed out that, although the law mandates Sesotho as the foundation of education, many schools fail to implement this policy.
They stated that, they are actively pushing the central inspectorate to enforce the use of Sesotho in schools.
Additionally, they urged the Sesotho Academy to take greater responsibility in safeguarding and promoting the language.
Media representatives, on the other hand, called for guidance and training from relevant institutions, such as the Ministry of Education and the LCA, to help them improve their use of Sesotho and foster a deeper appreciation of the language.
The meeting was prompted by concerns from the Maseru District Administrator regarding the misuse of Sesotho in the media, as well as the declining performance of students in Sesotho language examinations.
