LHDA assesses progress on the LHWP & reinforces its long-term impact

The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority-LHDA has convened a two-day stakeholder conference in Maseru, to assess progress on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, and reinforce its long-term impact under the theme: “Waves of Change.”

LHDA’s Division Manager, Nts’oli Maiketso, highlighted several completed projects that include the development of the Pitseng-to-Katse and Ha Seshote-to-Polihali roads.

He noted ongoing work including the Senqu Bridge and the Polihali Dam, which are 75% complete, as well as the Oxbow Hydropower project and various social and public programs.

Maiketso also announced an LHDA initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, through a TBD unit aimed at accrediting individuals with skills but no formal education.

Meanwhile, LHDA’s Chief Financial Officer Lefa Mokaoane pointed out that, the South African government covers costs related to water delivery to South Africa, while Lesotho is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the hydroelectric power generation component of the project.

On the social impact front, LHDA’s Social Service and Compliance Manager, Lebohang Moleko reported that, the authority is implementing two electrification projects covering 349 households in Ha Makhalanyane.

Additionally, more than 4 000 people are already benefiting from 20 electrification projects implemented in 2016.
