BASOTHO GRIPE OVER IRRELEVANT PLASTIC LEVY: EFFORTS TO CURB POLLUTION QUESTIONED

Some Basotho have expressed their dissatisfaction and highlighted the irrelevance of paying the plastic levy. Last year, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry enacted a compulsory Plastic Levy, in efforts to curb plastic pollution in the country

A Thaba-Tseka based retail shop employee who opted for anonymity, said most of their customers are still inflexible about paying the plastic levy, saying they are being cheated. She also said most of them seem unaware that the Plastic Levy was officially introduced in the country

On the other hand, Mr. Retselisitsoe Maanela from Tlokoeng, says he is confused as to why some shops have implemented the plastic levy, as most foreign-owned shops do not charge it, hence they feel cheated

Still on this, another person who opted for anonymity said the plastic levy is a ridiculous move as Lesotho is merely amongst the global

The levy came into effect last December and Some retail stores long implemented this levy
