Basotho Pele’s party Leader Slams Lesotho’s Corruption & Calls for Reform

The leader of Basotho Pele’s party Jason Shao says, the rampant corruption in Lesotho is eroding the country’s economy and obstructing its development

Speaking at a media conference in Maseru today, Shao stressed the need for strong and decisive action to combat corruption. He cited China as an example noting that, the country enforces strict anti-corruption laws, including the death penalty in extreme cases.

He however highlighted that, punitive measures alone are not enough and that, people must be paid a decent living wage to discourage them from accepting bribes

He also highlighted the issue of graduate unemployment, pointing out that, while the government funds higher education for Basotho, many are unable to repay their student loans due to lack of job opportunities after graduation.

He further lamented that, many impoverished Basotho would rather seek South African citizenship than remain in Lesotho; citing the low wages in the country. He appealed to the country’s leadership, to prioritise the needs of Lesotho and its people.
