Young people-particularly girl children, are being encouraged to venture into the technology sector, to help close the digital gender gap and unlock opportunities for equal participation in the digital space.
This call was made during the recent commemoration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, hosted jointly by the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, the Lesotho Communications Authority, Econet Telecom Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho, and the Girls in ICT Forum at Lerotholi Polytechnic.
Observed globally on May 17th, this year’s theme highlighted the urgent need to advance digital gender equality, ensuring women and girls can equally benefit from and contribute to digital transformation.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, LNBS’ Director Mrs. Maleloko Nkhahle highlightedLesotho’s responsibility as a member of the International Telecommunication Union; to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on gender equality.
Mrs. ‘Mabafokeng Khoboko Mongalo– an Information Security Engineer representing Econet Telecom Lesotho, encouraged young women to pursue careers in ICT, despite the challenges they may face.
Similarly, on behalf of Vodacom Lesotho, Ms. Rorisang Motlomelo– the Manager of Solutions Delivery, introduced the Vodacom Digital Skills Hub, aimed at equipping young people with essential digital skills for today’s workforce.
