Hope for Rural Women Assembly Kicks off fight against global warming with planting of 1150 indigenous trees at Lithabaneng Ha Sekhukhuni in Berea.
In her speech, Mrs. Mamoratuoa Nts’ekhe, the Chairperson of the assembly, stated that climate change poses a significant threat to both the environment and humanity, adding that it is essential to unite and take steps to reduce its impact.
Nts’ekhe stated that Ha-Sekhukhuni used to have some exotic trees, but the land is now degraded and unproductive due to factors like deforestation and uncontrolled grazing. She further stated that the motive behind planting indigenous trees in this area was to restore its natural vegetation and its habitants, in order to promote a safe and healthy future.
Mapaballo Lerata, a local resident of Ha-Sekhukhuni, echoed Nts’ekhe’s concern about the environment and emphasized the need for local communities to unite in their efforts to preserve it. Lerata attested that in many places, the environment is deteriorating due to overgrazing and deforestation.
