Despite the Lesotho National Federation of Organizations of the Disabled- LNFOD, having reportedly established district offices to ease the reporting of abuse cases; there remains a dire concern regarding the high rate of Gender-Based Violence cases affecting people with disability
LNFOD recently conducted a vital sensitization workshop; engaging various stakeholders on the critical issue of Gender-Based Violence against people living with disability within their respective communities.
A Human Rights Officer Thaabe ‘Moso expressed profound concern about these GBV cases, noting with dismay that, perpetrators are often family members – individuals entrusted with the very responsibility to protect them.
‘Moso said, as one of the most disadvantaged groups, the disabled often fall victim to abuse due to their vulnerability, poverty, and a tragic lack of societal support.
MEANWHILE…
Preparations are now underway for the official launch of the Disability Advisory Council. This was confirmed by LNFOD’s Director Adv. Nkhasi Sefuthi. Adv. Sefuthi stated that, the Council is expected, among other crucial tasks, to monitor the implementation of the 2021 Persons with Disability Equity Act, which will guide stakeholders on disability laws.
He explained that, this Council of experts, will also counsel stakeholders on necessary adjustments and modifications, to ensure the inclusive protection of the rights and welfare of all people living with disability in Lesotho.
