The United Nations and the World Food Programme are intensifying their call for urgent solutions to address hunger and the devastating impacts of climate change; urging Lesotho to significantly accelerate its efforts. This renewed appeal follows the recent launch of the WFP’s Second-Generation Strategic Plan, held in Maseru.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations Lejone Mpotjoane, lauded the World Food Programme as a deeply trusted partner to Lesotho. Mpotjoane stated that, this new strategic plan, further deepens WFP’s commitment to supporting Lesotho through vital initiatives such as, widespread school feeding programmes and crucial disaster resilience response efforts.
WFP’s Country Director Elliot Vhurumuku, pledged the organization’s continued unwavering support. He highlighted a significant achievement: over the past five decades, WFP’s programmes have directly benefited 50,000 children across the country in the last five years alone.
Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator Amanda Mukwashi urged all relevant stakeholders, to ensure the implementation of proper, sustainable farming tools.
She also issued a direct call to all Basotho, to actively participate in the restoration of vital wetlands and degraded land emphasizing that, these efforts are critical to effectively tackling the impacts of climate shocks.
