Cameroonian opposition figure Anicet Ekane has died in detention, five weeks after he was arrested. He was among the leaders of an opposition coalition who endorsed Issa Tchiroma Bakary in October’s presidential election
Bakary claimed he won this year’s poll, officially won by 92-year-old Paul Biya. He has since fled to The Gambia after pro-election protests intensified
Meanwhile, the cause of Ekane’s death has not been announced. His party; African Movement for New Independence and Democracy, has accused the authorities of denying him access to his medication – a charge the government has denied
His Party’s Spokesman said, Ekane died yesterday morning at a military medical facility, after his health worsened over the weekend
His family also said, an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of his death.
