The Veterinary office in Mohale's Hoek has strongly warned the public against the practice of illegally importing animals into the district to reduce transmission of diseases.
The District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Owen Kakono said through illegally imported animals, it is easy for diseases to be spread from one country to another. The warning follows the ban on the importation of live ruminants and institution of strict control on the importation of red meat and red meat products from South Africa. The Ministry of Agriculture resorted to those measures due to an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in the Free State province. According to Dr. Kakono, Rift Valley Fever is an acute feer that causes a viral disease which affects domestic animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and camels as well as human beings. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Dr. Kakono stated that besides suspension of all imports of live ruminants, the Ministry has also put in place import conditions such as issuing of separate import permits for individual products and filling of application forms five days prior to importation.
