Lesotho Government and their Japanese counterparts signed an agreement worth M38million at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs boardroom.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa, signed on behalf of the government while Japan Ambassador to Lesotho Mr. Toshiro Ozawa signed for Japan. In his remarks at this function, Mr. Tsekoa said the money will assist Lesotho modify its mitigation to heavy snowfall, early frost, hailstorms and cyclones as well as floods precipitated by climate change. Mr. Tsekoa said due to Lesotho's topography, the country is prone to the adverse effects of climate change like drought, adding that the assistance will go a long way in enabling the country to develop capacity for mitigating such natural disasters. The Minister also congratulated Japan for being one of the first developed countries to fulfilling the commitment reached in Copenhagen last year of assisting the developing countries. Passing his remarks, Mr. Ozawa said Japan has many partners in Africa, including Lesotho hence the signing of the agreement. He said the money is intended to assist Lesotho adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. Meanwhile, the money will be administered by the Lesotho Disaster Management (DMA), which deals with disasters in the country. No one has commented on this article.
