The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in South Africa announced cluster outbreaks of enteric fever, also known as typhoid fever, reported in the Western Cape and North West.

According to reports, typhoid fever which is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection, was regularly found in South Africa and cases were reported in low numbers every year.

Symptoms often include high fever, headache, stomach pain and either constipation or diarrhoea, and can be fatal if left untreated.
