The National University of Lesotho’s students are grief-stricken following the untimely death of a female third year sociology student, who is suspected to have committed suicide.

The student was found dead at her Hata-Butle residence by Students Representative Council’s president Tumo Tsanyane.

Members of the NUL SRC say, they suspect that the student committed suicide in what they believe was triggered by a tormenting financial stress. Tsanyane explained that they found some phone screenshots suspected to have been send by the deceased to her school mate before the incident.

Tsanyane attributed the problem to a delay by the National Manpower Development Secretariat, to award students their monthly allowances explaining that, a delay in academic registration leads to the delay in processing of the loan bursaries of students admitted at the university.

Tsanyane said initially, the delaying was blamed on the NMDS but it has now also turned to the University.

He advised students’ parents to be prepared for anything as there is no guarantee that their children will be sponsored, explaining that the university does not take responsibility for student’s’ sponsorship.
