Construction, Mining, Quarrying and Allied Workers Union – CMQ’s general secretary Mr. Robert Mokhahlane says Basotho workers employed by the Chinese owned construction companies are exposed to exploitation and abuse daily.

Mokhahlane said it is embarrassing how Chinese companies in Lesotho, deliberately break laws and violate human rights.

He accused the government of not doing enough to ensure that Chinese companies abide by labour laws and protect their workers’ rights even though the majority of these companies are working on government projects.

He indicated that workers working on the construction of Ha Mpiti to Sehlabathebe road in Qacha’s Nek are enduring appalling labour abuses and the project is marred by allegations of sex-for-jobs where Chinese men sexually abuse women at the site so that their contracts could be renewed

He said Lesotho is a signatory to numerous human rights treaties yet it is ignoring these violations committed by the Chinese.
