European Union’s -EU Head of Delegation to Lesotho Paola Amadei says uncertainty on the status of acting Zimbabwean judge Justice Charles Hungwe in the High Court of Lesotho has been cleared following the extension of his contract until February 2023.
Amadei said the European Union in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme- UNDP, has secured funding to extend the current project until the end of February 2023, to allow Hungwe, the last remaining foreign judge, to continue presiding the cases before him, and that EU shoulders the responsibility of paying his salary.
In November 2021, the Judicial Service Commission extended Justice Hungwe’s contract until the end of February this year. As a result of this, he could not appear before the court, a move which prompted the cases he is presiding over to be postponed awaiting his contract’s renewal.
