An unknown disease has killed at least 143 people in Democratic Republic of Congo’s southwestern province

The country’s deputy governor of Kwango province and the provincial Minister of health said infected people had flu-like symptoms, including high fever and severe headaches

A medical team has been sent to the Panzi health zone to collect samples and carry out an analysis in order to identify the disease.

The civil society leader Cephorien Manzanza said the situation is extremely worrying as the number of infected people might rise, saying Panzi is in a hard-to-reach area, which might cause difficulties in the medical supplies

Meanwhile, reports revealed that women and children were the most seriously affected by the disease.
