The Lesotho Workers Association-LEWA has called on the Social Cluster Committee to intervene, after the Ministry of Home affairs, Local Government, Chieftainship and police failed to honour an agreement to increase the salaries of chiefs, effective from the 1st of April this year.

LEWA’s Secretary Mr. Hlalefang Seoaholimo explained that, the association had appealed to the ministry for chiefs’ salaries to be raised from M1,500 to M6,000. However, the ministry proposed a figure of M3,000-an agreement that was written and signed by the Principal Secretary.

Responding to the matter, the ministry’s Principal Secretary Dr. ‘Mamphaka Mabesa clarified that, April 1st was a review date, not the actual date for implementing the salary increases.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Chiefs’ Association Chief Leloko Mohalenyane expressed concern over the matter stating that, chiefs work hard but are paid very little. He appealed to the ministry to honour the agreement so they can continue serving their communities with commitment.

The committee has resolved that by the 29th of this month, the Ministry must provide a response indicating when the salary adjustments, will be made.
