The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector ‘Mareabetsoe Mofoka, is reminding the public that, both giving and accepting bribes are serious crimes. Sub-Inspector Mofoka’s warning comes after the recent arrest of four Maseru-based 4+1 taxi drivers, who were allegedly caught bribing a police officer.
In an interview with PC FM, Sub-Inspector Mofoka confirmed the arrests stating that, the drivers faced various charges including failure to display a number plate disk, driving without a seatbelt, and failing to produce required vehicle documents. She said, the drivers have since appeared in court, with charges temporarily withheld, and were released on condition that they do not commit similar offences within the next year.
Addressing concerns about police integrity, Sub-Inspector Mofoka stressed that, the public should not be misled into believing that, offering bribes to officers is acceptable. She said that, individuals who offer bribes are equally complicit in committing a clear crime. She concluded by warning that, such malicious norms compromise the public’s trust in the police force.
