The Government of Lesotho with support from the European Union, has launched a groundbreaking nationwide Justice Needs Survey. This initiative aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the justice-related needs and experiences of Basotho

This development was announced during a one-day workshop held in Maseru; marking the commencement of the survey. The survey seeks to uncover and address legal challenges faced by Basotho, particularly marginalized groups. The workshop brought together Principal Chiefs from across the country, who discussed the survey’s aims, objectives and potential community impact.

The Minister of Law and Justice Richard Ramoeletsi highlighted the importance of a bottom-up approach to justice sector reform stating that, citizens play a pivotal role in shaping legal solutions. He added that, the nationwide survey will give a voice to ordinary Basotho, allowing them to contribute to the reform process.

EU’s Team Leader Chimwemwe Mangeni underscored the need for data-driven legal reforms in Lesotho. Mangeni stated that, an inclusive and responsive justice system requires understanding how citizens engage with the law. This initiative aligns with Lesotho’s Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions
