Detective Inspector Thabo Setenane-the head of the Criminal Investigation Division at Qacha’s Nek Police Station reported that, the man had returned home from a stokvel gathering and, after calling his daughter, he told her he was going to end his life. He was discovered hanging moments later, and no suicide note was left.
Detective Inspector Setenane confirmed the man was reportedly intoxicated at the time. He urged the community to consume alcohol responsibly suggesting, the tragedy might have been avoided had he drunk in moderation.
Psychologist Mahlape Moremoholo of Khanya Consultancy noted that, suicide is always linked to mental health, describing it as a behaviour driven by a desire to escape unbearable psychological pain. She said, individuals considering or dying by suicide often struggle with mental illness or overwhelming social pressures, which can lead to profound hopelessness.
