The Rights Advocacy group SECTION 2 has raised concerns regarding the ongoing nationwide re-registration of voters being conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission-IEC.

The group highlights that, the IEC’s requirement for all Basotho to re-register to appear on a new General Electors’ Register, effectively means that, those who do not comply, will lose their eligibility to vote, despite having registered previously.

SECTION 2 argues that, the electoral act does not empower the IEC to discard the existing register. They noted that any necessary maintenance should involve continual updating, correcting errors, and removing ineligible persons, not a wholesale re-registration.

The group recommended that, the commission operates strictly within the bounds of the law and called for clarity on the legal basis compelling all Basotho to re-register.
